General Practitioner

Healthcare Australia (HCA) is a major provider of healthcare services across Australia, including allied health, primary care, recruitment, NDIS, care services, and training.

In December 2024, we began providing health, mental health, and wellbeing services across the onshore Immigration Detention network. Our team of nurses, general practitioners, and allied health professionals offer a range of healthcare services, including health assessments, chronic disease management, health promotion, wound management, immunizations, and other primary health interventions.  HCA also launched a 24/7 Virtual Care Centre (VCC), offering remote healthcare through telehealth and video consultations to enhance onsite care for detainees.

  • Location: Northam, Yongah Hill Immigration Detention Centre
  • Employment Type: Full-time, permanent onsite role with potential for a hybrid work model

The General Practitioner is responsible for leading and managing the delivery of high-quality primary healthcare services to immigration detainees within the detention centre.

This position requires a strong foundation in general practice and primary healthcare, supported by specialised knowledge of the unique health needs that arise within the detention environment. The GP must be equipped to manage a wide range of complex presentations, including mental health conditions, substance use issues, and trauma-related health concerns whilst maintaining high quality and comprehensive medical records.

A key responsibility of the role is to provide clinical oversight and to act as the primary medical escalation point for health staff working within the immigration detention centre.

Join us in bringing a new approach to medical and wellbeing care for detainees by:

  • Providing preventative health checks, immunisations, and health promotion.
  • Managing acute medical presentations and complex comorbidities.
  • Managing chronic diseases and attending to day-to-day medical concerns.
  • Supporting patients with acute and chronic mental health issues alongside our multidisciplinary mental health team.
  • Adapting to the evolving operational requirements and changing health needs of the immigration detention cohort, ensuring a flexible, responsive, and person-centred approach to care.

Let’s talk about you:

To be considered for this role, you must hold a medical degree (MBBS or equivalent) and have full registration with the Medical Board of Australia, without restrictions. Fellowship with the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners (RACGP), the Australian College of Rural and Remote Medicine (ACRRM), or equivalent substantial clinical practice experience is essential.

You will have demonstrated capability in managing mental health and alcohol or other drug concerns. This includes an understanding of the impacts of acute, chronic, and complex trauma on physical and psychological health, and the ability to provide safe, trauma-informed care within a high-risk and high-stress setting. Authorisation as an opioid substitution treatment prescriber is mandatory, or a willingness to obtain authorisation. You should also have knowledge and experience in managing public health issues, particularly communicable diseases, and a strong understanding of the needs of vulnerable populations.

Excellent communication and interpersonal skills are essential, along with the ability to work collaboratively and effectively within a multidisciplinary team. A strong commitment to continuous improvement, reflective practice, and maintaining high clinical standards is also required. You must demonstrate a clear understanding of ethical considerations and confidentiality in healthcare delivery and be able to navigate and adapt to a complex and challenging healthcare environment.

You’ll bring your passion for Primary Health care and be rewarded with:

  • A chance to work within a well-respected Australian organisation with over 1000 employees, including doctors, nurses, and allied health professionals.
  • Competitive remuneration and recognition for your efforts.
  • An opportunity to be a part of a close-knit, collaborative team that works well with all stakeholders involved.
  • Access to professional development and educational opportunities to support ongoing learning and maintenance of high clinical standards. A varied and rewarding career in a unique healthcare environment.
